How to Check Your iPhone Battery Health

Last week, at the end of 2017, the slow down drama made Apple apologized and has promised to offer battery replacement allowance in 2018 as a solution for it users. After Apple’s confirmed slowing down older iPhone model to protect ageing battery, people are more concerned about their iPhone battery health. Battery lifespan always is one of the main focus in the age of smartphones. Even though you don’t think you need to replace your iPhone battery, it would be better if you keep an eye on it in case iPhone shuts down suddenly one day. Hence this post will tell you some ways to check iPhone battery health.

Method 1: Official Apple Support App in App Store

Apple said they will introduce a new app in the early 2018 for users to know more about the condition of their iPhone batteries. But before that coming, you can use Apple Support app to check your iPhone first. It’s said that if your battery need to be serviced, you will receive a message shown on Settings > Battery in iOS 10.2.1 and later. This is true if you have already installed Apple Support app on iPhone. However, for those who haven’t updated to iOS 11 nor installed this app yet, this method won’t work for you because now this app requires iOS 11 to run.

  1. Install Apple Support on iPhone and sign in with Apple ID accordingly.
  2. Follow onscreen instructions to launch diagnostic test for battery and then you will get the report.

For those who has an iPhone but can’t install the Apple Support App because of older iOS, you can go to Apple website and ask Apple Support for help. However, if your phone is out of warranty period, they won’t give you any online support but suggest you to go the local Apple service store.

Method 2: Third-party Apps for iPhone Battery

If you search, there are many apps for checking battery health in App store. You can find Battery Life and coconutBattery among them easily. But the app coconutBattery is a little troublesome to use for it needs a Mac and maybe a little risk. So here I use Battery Life as an example.

After installed Battery Life on iPhone, you will see data like this shown on the app. But you should know that those data would change according to various situations, they are not as accurate as you think. For example, if you turn on Low Power mode, those data will show a better battery condition than normal.

Method 3: Analytics in iPhone Settings

It’s an old method, and messy one. Not sure if it still works on iOS 11 and later. It’s kind of a clumsy way to check your phone battery. To those who stays in iOS 10 or former, you can follow these steps.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and scroll down to Analytics.
  2. Click into Analytics, and wait for its response, and then you will see Analytics Data.
  3. You will see logs like those show in the picture below, and you may find about battery capacity in those log files. (I didn’t find mine, though)

More: About Apple Battery Replacement Allowance

  1. This allowance is only offered to iPhone 6 and later, so the iPhone 5S and older models won’t get the allowance even if they fail the test in Genius Bar.
  2. This offer is set to work through December in 2018 and only in 2018 so far. So seize your chance everyone if your battery is dying. And if you’re covered under warranty, you’re free to replace battery at any time if it retains less than 80% of origin capacity.
